Eve Faulkes Justice Through Design Endowment

After more than 40 years at the West Virginia University School of Art & Design, Eve Faulkes is retiring. Her legacy will live on at the school with the creation of the Eve Faulkes Justice Through Design Endowment.

The endowment will provide scholarships for underrepresented students majoring in graphic design.

Endowed Professorships awarded in Art and Theatre

The West Virginia University College of Creative Arts has made its selections for two endowed professorships within the college.

Shoji Satake received The J. Bernard Schultz Endowed Professorship in Art and Radhica Ganapathy was awarded The Mabel DeVries Tanner Endowed Professorship in Theatre.

Michael Sherwin’s ‘Vanishing Points’ promotes Indigenous land rights

West Virginia University Associate Professor Michael Sherwin turned his long-term photography project focused on Indigenous American presence into a book. Vanishing Points is now available for pre-order.

Vanishing Points began when Sherwin learned a local shopping center was built upon an 800-year old sacred burial ground and village site associated with the Monongahelan culture.

CCA Creative Consultants program wraps up first year

Fifty-five students in the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts made up the inaugural cohort for the college’s Creative Consultants program.

The program matches outstanding creative arts students with extraordinary professionals in the fields of art and design, music, theatre, dance, and arts education, administration and industry. Consultants are alumni and friends of the college.

College of Creative Arts awards research activity

West Virginia University College of Creative Arts has selected the winners of the College’s annual Faculty/Student Mentored Research Awards.

Amy Simpson was selected for the graduate first prize for her research, entitled “The Memorization, Preparation, and Performance of Piano Music: Cognitive Foundations and Current Neuro-Music Research.” She is mentored by Professor Peter Amstutz.

Each school selects their top senior based on merit. The top outstanding senior for the college is then voted on by administrators.

WVU adds Art Therapy Degree

A new Bachelor of Arts degree in West Virginia University’s School of Art & Design will blend studio art training with psychology and counseling skills, giving graduates the foundations to pursue careers in the growing field of art therapy.

“Art therapy is a mental health profession that combines creative art making with human service skills,” said Dr. Annie McFarland, assistant professor of art education. “Art therapy can be used to target specific therapeutic goals, promote healing and improve overall mental health and wellness.”
