WVU offers performing and visual arts summer camps

Summer camps will be offered this year at the West Virginia University College of Creative Arts. Many of the camps have both in-person and virtual options.

Viola Bootcamp

June 10-13

Viola Bootcamp features daily lessons, master classes, technique classes, viola ensemble, ample practice time, lectures, performances, bluegrass/olde time jam session, movie night, finale recital and more! 

Summer Brass Academy

June 14-18

The West Virginia University Summer Brass Academy is a week-long brass camp designed to help young brass musicians develop technical ability, interpretive skills and increase their understanding of a variety of genres and musical styles through masterclasses, private practice time and individual lessons. Students will be instructed by WVU Brass Faculty and additionally gain insight into music entrepreneurship, pedagogy, wellness and self-care, and obtain experience in chamber music ensembles. The camp will be offered in-person with some virtual options.

Summer Dance Teen Academy

July 11 - 17

This weeklong, in-residence dance program is geared toward dancers ages 12-18 interested in furthering their dance training. The faculty includes current WVU Dance Program instructors as well as guest artists. The program will offer dance technique classes, classes in wellness and conditioning and other movement related classes. It is required that applicants have at least 3 years of prior dance experience to be eligible for registration to the Teen Academy.

Summer Dance Young Academy

July 12 - 16

The program offers instruction by current students and alumni of the WVU Dance Program who have all been chosen specifically to work with your child. Students will experience and receive daily instruction in a variety of dance styles, which will include Ballet, Creative Movement, Jazz, Hip-hop and Tap.

Visual Arts Summer Academy - Day Camp

July 12 - 16

Paint a canvas, throw a pot and let their imagination go wild. Children will meet new friends while learning drawing and printmaking techniques as well as how to use pottery wheels and sculpture tools. Grades K-7 will participate in studio art workshops from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Canady Creative Arts Center. Lunch and all art supplies will be provided.

Visual Arts Summer Academy - Residential Camp

July 18-22

Under the supervision of faculty, students will participate in studio art workshops Monday through Thursday. Supervised by student counselors and faculty in WVU’s Art Education program, participants will reside in the Evansdale Residential Complex near the Creative Arts Center. Faculty from WVU’s School of Art & Design will facilitate this camp and art teachers from around the state of West Virginia will teach individual workshops.

Summer Composition Academy

July 19 - 30

The WVU Summer Composition Academy will be held virtually. Activities include individual lessons, group lessons and an online concert of music created by the students. The Composition Academy is for high school students, with beginner or advanced level of composition skills, and the only prerequisite is the ability to read music.

Summer Harp Academy

July 26 - 30 

The WVU Summer Harp Academy is directed by Christine Mazza, WVU's harp instructor, and will include activities for beginner and intermediate harp students who own their own instruments. The Summer Harp Academy will include two private lessons daily, practice time, harp theory and ensemble rehearsals. Guest artist Elizabeth Good will offer Qi Gong instruction, designed for performance relaxation, mental focus and confidence.
