Shelby Garrett headshotName: Shelby Garrett

Class Rank: Second Year, MFA

Major and Minor:

Acting

Hometown: Wheeling, WV

Why did you choose to attend WVU?
When I was shopping for different MFA programs, I knew that I wanted something that was affordable and (hopefully!) close to where I grew up. For the past 15 years, I have been so fortune to have been able to live and perform in different cities, such as Cincinnati, Columbus, Chicago, LA and New York. So, when WVU offered me a spot in their MFA program, I knew that it was an offer that I wanted to snatch up! Attending WVU has given me the opportunity to not only grow as an artist and teacher, but it has given my family the opportunity to spend more time with me! (whether they like it or not!).

What do you like about your major and your WVU experience?
Hands down, my cohort is what keeps my spirit alive! The acting program at WVU can, at times, be extremely rigorous and demanding, not only on our bodies and minds, but our spirits, as well. Having the 7 other members of my cohort to lean on has been a blessing.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering attending WVU's College of Creative Arts?
Make sure you feel at home with the space, the teachers and the students. We spend ALL OF OUR TIME in the Creative Arts building, running from early morning classes and usually ending our days with late rehearsals. You are in this building and around the same people for long periods of time, so having that sense of "home" is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Have you recently received any awards or scholarships? Have you recently participated in any competitions, productions, performances or exhibitions?
Thankfully, WVU offered me a scholarship and an assistantship to attend their MFA program! I knew that I wanted a program that was going to pay me for my time and WVU was able to award me the right amount for me to say YES! As for performances, you can find the grad students dipping our toes in many different projects! For me, I just recently closed my thesis show, MEASURE FOR MEASURE, a few weeks ago!

Do you participate in any clubs or organizations?
Right now, I don't have the time (or brain power!) to be apart of any clubs here on campus. I am, however, a registered yoga instructor, so with my free time, I am able to practice yoga and teach different classes.
