Bernie Schultz

After a long career at West Virginia University, J. Bernard Schultz will give his final lecture on campus at 5 p.m. Nov. 9.

Schultz recently retired from his position as professor of art history in the School of Art & Design at WVU’s College of Creative Arts. He had previously served as chair of the division of art, associate dean of the College of Create Arts, and from 2011 to 2014, Dean of the College.

Schultz was instrumental in creating the Art Museum of WVU, and from 2011 to 2014 he was director of education and external affairs for the museum. His research deals with the interrelationships between art and medical history. Dr. Shultz has been recognized as a distinguished teacher at WVU and honored with the Governor's Award for Leadership in the Arts for the State of West Virginia. In 2009, he was named to the Commission on the Arts in West Virginia.

Dr. Shultz will give his final lecture at WVU on, "Benvenuto Cellini's Guarantee: A New Approach the Renaissance Figure Drawing."

The lecture, also known as, "Why ‘Ernie the Skeleton’ Found a Home in WVU's Figure Drawing Classes," will focus on how a method of learning to draw the human figure, begun in the 16th century, is still used today.

The lecture will be held at 5 p.m. in Bloch Hall of WVU's Creative Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis
