WVU to host musicians Paula Bujes and Pedro Huff for full slate of activities

Paula Bujes and Pedro Huff

Violin and cello duo Paula Bujes and Pedro Huff will take part in a full slate of activities during a visit to West Virginia University’s School of Music Feb. 4-8.

Performing together since 2005, the duo has participated in music festivals, performed recitals and taught masterclasses in Brazil, Panama and the United States. They currently teach at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Brazil, where they perform regularly while pursuing their research interests.

Bujes researches the pedagogy of Bulgarian Trendafil Milanov and its applications in the  Brazilian context, while Huff is experimenting with building students’ cello technique  and musicianship through developing their aural skills utilizing popular culture.

To start their week at the Creative Arts Center, Bujes and Huff will lead a workshop for the Morgantown Community Orchestra on Saturday, Feb. 4. Then, they will perform a recital featuring Brazilian works at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5 in Bloch Hall. At 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, they will lecture on the Milanov violin pedagogy in room 200B. A second lecture on Brazilian folk music and skill building will be given at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 7 in Bloch Hall. To wrap up the week, Bujes and Huff will teach a violin and cello masterclass at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 in room 227A.

“I believe this will be an amazing experience for students, as they will interact with highly-qualified musicians from a different country,” said Juliana Cantarelli, lecturer in the School of Music. “Although performing traditional instruments, Paula and Pedro are bringing their Brazilian musical culture heritage to this Mountaineer scene, and students will have a chance to understand and connect with music in its different shapes and forms outside of the traditional Western realm.”
