Sarah Bolt visits classes virtually

Sarah Bolt virtually visits with students

In September, junior and senior BFA Musical Theatre students got the opportunity to speak to Emmy-Nominated Broadway actress Sarah Bolt about careers in the musical theatre industry.

Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre Jeremiah Downes told us that she talked to them about “What it’s like to make theatre in COVID and post-COVID times, what the future looks like for the commercial Broadway, film and TV industries and how to remain true to one’s self as an artist and human. It was an excellent afternoon!”

A series of other guest artists will be visiting the School of Theatre & Dance’s Musical Theatre studio classes this semester as a part of enriching the performance curriculum during the need to maintain COVID safety protocols

“It was really fun talking with her she was so nice and very genuine,” said senior Hannah Mort. “Getting to talk with Sarah really assured me about getting ready to leave school and go off into the scary, real world. She made it clear that the most important talent you can have is the ability to be your genuine self.

"I think that’s something we as actors forget. We’re so used to playing other people that we forget that the people hiring us want to know who we really are and what we can bring to the project. One thing that she said that stood out to me was, ‘Everyone’s going to bring the same lines/notes, so what else are you going to bring?’”

Bolt is known for her roles in television shows “Peter Rabbit” (for which she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy) and “Elementary” and for the film “Brittany Runs a Marathon." Bolt also has a significant Broadway musical career. She was in Wicked in 2003 and originated the role of Mary Patrick in Sister Act in 2011.
